surface cleaning
n.
Preservation and ConservationThe process of cleaning undesirable, superficial dirt or grime from a document without liquids.
Notes
Surface cleaning typically begins with a soft brush. In some instances, dry-cleaning bags and plastic erasers might be used. Documents made with pastels, charcoal, graphite pencil, or watercolors, or documents that are fragile, cannot be easily cleaned using these techniques as the pigments may be removed along with the dirt and the support may be damaged.
