close-up

n. A photograph or motion picture image made with the camera near the subject. A portrait that shows only the face.

Notes

Two photographs made with lenses of different focal lengths may show the same area of the subject, but the overall effect may be quite different. Close-ups tend to exaggerate variations in the surface of a subject; a close-up of a face will make the nose appear larger because the nose is significantly closer to the camera than the ears. Images made with longer focal length lenses tend to 'flatten' the subject because the distances between the camera and the different parts of the subject are more nearly the same.
