Notes

In this glossary, 'two-dimensional' is used in the vernacular sense to describe materials that have little depth relative to their height and width. Two-dimensional items may be pliable; they can be distorted so that they are no longer flat but define a curved surface in three dimensions. Although they have some thickness, paper, film, and cloth are examples of two-dimensional materials.
