preprint

n. An article, usually of an academic nature, distributed before being published or presented at a conference. An article, usually of an academic nature, that is intended for publication and that has been distributed in preliminary form for comment and review.

In some disciplines, preprints are limited to those articles accepted for publication by a peer-reviewed journal. In other fields, preprints may be used to describe research memoranda, working papers, and technical reports.
