narrower term

n. (NT, abbr.)A cross-reference pointing from a general to a more specific topic.

Narrower terms are part of the syndetic structure used in a thesaurus, especially one constructed using the ANSI Z39.19 standard, Guidelines for the Construction, Format, and Management of Monolingual Thesauri. Narrower terms are reciprocal to broader terms. For example, an entry for 'furniture' may include references to the narrower terms 'bed', 'chair', and 'chest'. Entries for each of those terms would include references to 'furniture' as a broader term.
