halftone
n.
A photomechanical process used to print a continuous tone, monochromatic image using one color of ink.
A print made using such a process.
Notes
A halftone gives the illusion of many shades of a tone by representing different densities using dots of different sizes. A dark area would be made up of many large dots, which may bleed into each other to form a solid. A light area has a few small dots, or no dots at all, allowing the light-colored base to reflect light. Color images may be printed in halftone by separating the original into its four component colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) and combining each as a separate halftone.
