An expert system is created by interviewing many experts in a field to determine rules of thumb that guide their decision-making process. Those rules are organized into a formal heuristic system. Those rules often do not make either-or decisions but use fuzzy logic. Expert systems generally perform well in a very specific area of knowledge.
