engraving

n. A design incised into a surface of an object. A print made from an engraved plate. A sound recording made using a cutting stylus to make an analog signal as the groove is cut.

Notes

An engraving2 is made by scoring a design into a plate. The plate is then inked, and the surface wiped, leaving ink in the incised design. The engraved plate is then pressed against paper to force the paper into the ink. Sometimes 'engraving' is used to describe all prints, including prints made using other processes.
