document interchange

n.ComputingThe use of a standard to allow the content and format of documents to be transferred among different systems.

Notes

Documents may be transmitted in a revisable form that allows them to be read and edited on different systems, or they may be transmitted in a final form that permits reading but not alteration. Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) is an example of a document interchange standard that can be used to create and share revisable documents. A commercial word processing format may also support document interchange through the use of a proprietary standard, such as WordPerfect. Adobe PDF is an example of a final form document interchange format.
