Prior to September 2012, the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) was known as the American Association for Museums. AAM maintains the Code of Ethics for Museums. AAM also operates the Continuum of Excellence accreditation program, which is based on the Characteristics of Excellence for U.S. Museums.
